Driving Mount Diablo This Fall: Gates, Fees, Hours

Mount Diablo State Park gates open at 8 a.m. and close at sunset. The vehicle day-use fee is $10 at North Gate Road and South Gate Road, and $6 at the Macedo Ranch and Mitchell Canyon staging areas. The summit stands at 3,849 feet. Plan around Sunday, October 4, 2026, when the roads close to cars until 2 p.m.
There is a specific kind of Bay Area morning that only happens in the fall. The summer haze is gone, the first real storm has not arrived, and the air turns so clear it feels like somebody wiped the lens. That is the morning to drive Mount Diablo.
You can be at the summit in under an hour from Fremont, Walnut Creek or Danville, and on the right day you can see across eight counties. It costs ten dollars and a tank of gas. Here is how to do it without getting turned around at a gate or locked inside the park.
What you actually see up there
Mount Diablo rises 3,849 feet out of the Diablo Range, which is not tall by California standards but is almost absurdly well placed. Nothing else nearby is anywhere near that high, so the view goes uninterrupted in every direction.
California State Parks puts it this way: when conditions are best, you can see almost 200 miles, across eight counties, from the Farallon Islands out past the Golden Gate to the crest of the Sierra Nevada. Those conditions show up a handful of times a year, and fall and winter mornings after a front clears are the best odds you will get.
Go early. The clarity burns off as the valley heats up, and the light on the Delta right after the gates open at 8 a.m. is the whole reason to set an alarm.
Gates, hours and fees
| Entrance | Address | Vehicle day-use fee | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| North Gate Road | 1300 North Gate Road, Walnut Creek | $10 | Driving to the summit from the north and the I-680 corridor |
| South Gate Road | 2675 Mt. Diablo Scenic Blvd, Blackhawk | $10 | Driving to the summit from Danville and the south |
| Macedo Ranch | 3756 Green Valley Road, Alamo | $6 | Trailhead parking, not a summit route |
| Mitchell Canyon | 96 Mitchell Canyon Road, Clayton | $6 | Trailhead parking, not a summit route |
Hours are the same everywhere: gates open at 8 a.m. and close at sunset. State Parks also notes that special rates may apply during peak seasons and high-demand holidays, so treat $10 as the number to bring, not the ceiling.
The two $6 entrances are the trap for first-timers. Macedo Ranch and Mitchell Canyon are staging areas for hikers and mountain bikers. They are lovely. They do not connect to Summit Road by car. If the point of your trip is the view from the top, you want North Gate or South Gate.
One Sunday to avoid: October 4
Mark this one. California State Parks has posted that on Sunday, October 4, 2026, vehicle access to North Gate Road, South Gate Road and Summit Road closes from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the Mount Diablo Challenge, the annual timed climb up the mountain.
That is the entire prime window of the day. If you show up at 9 a.m. that Sunday hoping for the summit, you are not getting up there, and the roads will be full of cyclists for whom this is a very big deal. Either come watch it on purpose, or pick a different day. Saturday October 3 and Sunday October 11 are both wide open.
The sunset rule that locks people in
This is the detail that ruins otherwise perfect afternoons. The gates do not stay open for stragglers. State Parks is explicit: visitors must be in their vehicles and headed out by sunset, or risk being locked inside the park overnight.
Sunset is not a vibe, it is a clock, and it moves fast in October and November. Whatever time you think you have at the top, take twenty minutes off it. The drive down from the summit to either gate is slow, narrow and full of switchbacks, and it is not a road you want to hurry in the dark. Give yourself the buffer.
Your headlights are part of this too. California requires low beams from 30 minutes after sunset, and the state’s headlight rules also kick in any time your wipers are running, which on Diablo in the fall can be most of the way down.
At the summit
The stone building at the top is the Summit Visitor Center, built in the late 1930s, and it is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are exhibits on the mountain’s natural and cultural history, an audio-visual room, and a gift shop.
One heads-up straight from State Parks: the elevator at the Summit Visitor Center is out of service until further notice. The observation deck is reached by stairs while that stands, which matters if anyone in your car has mobility limits. The view from the parking area is still extraordinary, so nobody has to miss the point of the trip.
A free way in
If ten dollars a carload adds up for your family, California runs a State Library Parks Pass program: free vehicle day-use passes checked out from public libraries, good at more than 200 participating state park units. Participation varies by park and passes go fast, so call your branch and confirm before you build a Saturday around it.
Make it a fall weekend
Diablo pairs well with the other clear-air drives this time of year. If you want wildlife instead of altitude, the tule elk at Tomales Point are bugling through October. If you want coast, the Monterey Peninsula in fall is the quietest it gets all year.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to drive up Mount Diablo?
The vehicle day-use fee is $10 at North Gate Road in Walnut Creek and South Gate Road in Blackhawk, the two entrances that connect to Summit Road. The Macedo Ranch and Mitchell Canyon staging areas charge $6 but do not lead to the summit by car. Special rates may apply on peak days.
What time does Mount Diablo State Park open and close?
Gates open at 8 a.m. and close at sunset year round. Visitors must be in their vehicles and headed out by sunset or they risk being locked inside the park. The Summit Visitor Center keeps separate hours, open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Is Mount Diablo closed for the Mount Diablo Challenge in 2026?
Yes, partially. California State Parks has posted that on Sunday, October 4, 2026, vehicle access to North Gate Road, South Gate Road and Summit Road is closed from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the Mount Diablo Challenge cycling event. Roads reopen to cars after 2 p.m.
How high is Mount Diablo and how far can you see?
Mount Diablo’s summit is 3,849 feet. California State Parks reports that under the best conditions the view reaches almost 200 miles across eight counties, from the Farallon Islands to the crest of the Sierra Nevada. Clear fall and winter mornings after a passing front offer the best chance.
Before you go
Clear morning, full tank, current tags. That last one is the only part of this that can turn a great drive into an expensive one, and it is the easiest to forget until a CHP unit is behind you on Ygnacio Valley Road.
