Big Sur This Fall: Highway 1 Is Open, One Park Is Not

Highway 1 through Big Sur is open end to end. Caltrans lists one 24-hour-a-day one-way traffic control 15.7 miles south of Monterey at Rocky Creek Bridge, running through November 30, 2026. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park remains closed after this summer’s fires. Julia Pfeiffer Burns is partially open at $10 a vehicle.
For most of the last three years, the honest answer to “can I drive Big Sur this weekend” was no. Regent’s Slide came down on February 9, 2024 and took the Carmel to Cambria stretch with it, and that was on top of Paul’s Slide six miles south, which had closed the road from January 2023 into the summer of 2024. The most famous coastal drive in America spent three years as two dead ends.
That ended on January 14, 2026, when Caltrans reopened the road at noon, roughly 90 days ahead of the March 30 estimate. The repair took 6,000 cubic yards of mud and debris out of the way, about 240 dump truck loads, and sank more than 4,600 steel bars up to 60 feet long into the hillside to hold it there.
So this is the first proper fall in a long time where you can leave the Bay Area in the morning and drive the whole thing. Here is the part nobody puts in a travel guide: what the road and the parks actually look like right now, which is not what you will read on the first page you land on.
What Caltrans actually says today
Caltrans publishes live conditions for State Route 1, and as of 1:18 a.m. on October 1, 2026, there is no closure listed anywhere between Carmel and Cambria. What there is, is traffic control.
| Where | What | When | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15.7 miles south of Monterey, at Rocky Creek Bridge | One-way controlled traffic | 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, through 6 a.m. on November 30, 2026 | Construction |
| Half Moon Bay, Bear Valley Road to Lagunitas Creek | One-way controlled traffic | 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, through October 2, 2026 | Construction |
| Marin, Sir Francis Drake Blvd to B Street | One-way controlled traffic | 24 hours a day, through 5 p.m. on October 16, 2026 | Construction |
The Rocky Creek one is the one that matters, and it is the detail that will shape your day. One-way control means a flagger alternating directions through a single lane, around the clock, on a bridge about 20 minutes south of Carmel. It is not a closure and it is not a reason to cancel. It is a reason to leave earlier than you planned, because on an October Saturday that single lane is the funnel every southbound car in Monterey County has to pass through.
Go early. Not for the light, though the light is excellent. Go early because the flagger does not care how good your playlist is.
Three agencies, three different pictures of Big Sur
Here is the trap, and it is worth knowing about before you plan around the wrong page.
Two fires burned in Monterey County this summer, and the agencies describing them are not describing the same situation.
| Source | What it says |
|---|---|
| CAL FIRE, incident page, October 1 | Plaskett Fire, started August 26, 30,124 acres, 100 percent contained. Timber Fire, started August 8, 25,352 acres, 88 percent contained. |
| California State Parks, park advisories | Quotes the Timber Fire at about 25,000 acres and 27 percent contained, and says Highway 1 remains closed in sections. |
| Caltrans, live road conditions | No closure between Carmel and Cambria. One 24/7 one-way control at Rocky Creek Bridge. |
The State Parks advisory text has not been refreshed. Its containment figure is weeks behind CAL FIRE’s, and its statement about Highway 1 is behind Caltrans. None of that is sinister. Park staff were fighting a fire, not updating a webpage. But it means the practical rule for a trip like this is simple: State Parks tells you about parks, Caltrans tells you about roads, and CAL FIRE tells you about fires. Ask each one only what it owns.
The other thing those numbers tell you is why the coast looks the way it does right now. Caltrans counts 75 miles of landslide-prone Big Sur coastline with more than 1,500 mapped slides. Add 55,000 burned acres above it and you have a hillside that will be interesting this winter. Fall is the good window. Take it.
Which parks are open
This is where the fires still show up, and it is the thing most likely to disappoint you if you drive down assuming everything is normal.
| Park | Status on October 1, 2026 | Vehicle day use | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park 26 miles south of Carmel, near mile marker 47.2 |
Closed, due to the Timber and Plaskett fires | $10 when it reopens | 8 a.m. to sunset |
| Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park | Partially open. Day-use areas, restrooms and the Partington Cove trail are open | $10 | 8 a.m. to sunset |
Two rules apply at both. All backcountry trails east of Highway 1 are closed indefinitely because of the fires and the repair work, and State Parks is blunt that entry into closed areas is prohibited and will be cited. At Julia Pfeiffer Burns the advisory also states that the cliff areas beyond the fenced boundaries, including the beach, Saddle Rock and the McWay Falls area, are completely off limits. The overlook is the view. There is no legal route down to it, and people get hurt on that slope every year proving it.
Pfeiffer Big Sur being closed is the real loss for a day trip. That is the redwood campground on the Big Sur River, the Big Sur Lodge, the Ewoldsen Nature Center, the easy family walk under the canopy. Call (831) 667-1112 before you go if the whole plan was built around it, because reopening dates are not posted in advance.
What the coast is like in October
Here is the upside of a weird year: Big Sur in October is as good as Big Sur gets, and it is quieter than it has been in a decade.
The summer fog bank that parks itself off this coast from June through August lifts in the fall, which means the pull-offs you have seen in photographs actually look like the photographs. The light goes long and gold by four in the afternoon. Water temperatures peak in September and October, so if you have ever wanted to put your feet in the Pacific below Carmel without regretting it immediately, this is your month.
And because three years of closure trained everyone to go somewhere else, the traffic has not fully come back. The Rocky Creek flagger is a nuisance. An uncrowded Big Sur is a gift.
Practical notes from anyone who has done it: there is no fuel for long stretches, so fill up in Carmel or Cambria rather than hoping. Cell coverage is patchy to nonexistent, so download your map before you lose signal. There are very few places to turn around safely, and the pull-offs are narrower than they look. And bring cash or a card for day use, because $10 at a kiosk is not the place to discover your phone is dead.
If Big Sur is not the trip this weekend, the Monterey Peninsula in fall is the quietest it gets all year, and Mount Diablo on a clear morning gets you eight counties of view for the same ten dollars and a quarter of the driving.
Check these before you leave
Road conditions on this stretch change with the weather, and a page that was right on Thursday can be wrong on Saturday. Three minutes, three sources:
- Caltrans road conditions for State Route 1 for closures and traffic control
- The State Parks page for the specific park you are driving to for gate status and fees
- CAL FIRE incidents if there is any active fire in Monterey County
Frequently asked questions
Is Highway 1 through Big Sur open in October 2026?
Yes. As of October 1, 2026, Caltrans lists no closure on State Route 1 between Carmel and Cambria. There is one-way controlled traffic 15.7 miles south of Monterey at Rocky Creek Bridge, in effect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, through 6 a.m. on November 30, 2026, due to construction. Check Caltrans before you leave, because conditions change.
When did Highway 1 reopen through Big Sur?
Caltrans reopened the Carmel to Cambria stretch at noon on January 14, 2026, about 90 days ahead of the March 30 estimate. Regent’s Slide had closed it since February 9, 2024, following the separate Paul’s Slide closure six miles south that ran from January 2023 to June 2024. Crews removed 6,000 cubic yards of debris and installed more than 4,600 steel bars.
Is Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park open?
No. California State Parks listed Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park as closed when checked on October 1, 2026, due to the Timber and Plaskett fires, with no posted reopening date. Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park is partially open, with day-use areas, restrooms and the Partington Cove trail accessible for $10 per vehicle. Call (831) 667-1112 for current status.
Can you hike to McWay Falls?
No. State Parks states that cliff areas beyond the fenced boundaries at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, including the beach, Saddle Rock and the McWay Falls area, are completely off limits. The fenced overlook is the only legal viewpoint. All backcountry trails east of Highway 1 are also closed indefinitely because of fire damage and repair work.
Before you point the car south
A Big Sur day is 250 miles of driving, most of it on a two-lane road with a flagger in the middle and a CHP unit somewhere behind you. Everything on that list is fine except an expired sticker, which is the one thing that turns a perfect coast day into a citation and a bad mood in Carmel.
Check your tags tonight. If they are close, renew your California registration with Sticker Quicker and skip the DMV entirely, with next-day FedEx delivery from a licensed California DMV Business Partner. Two minutes at the kitchen table, and the only thing standing between you and Rocky Creek Bridge is the flagger.
