So, if you are\nmoving or live in a different state, please check their exact laws. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a motorized scooter?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the state of California, a motorized scooter is a type of\nvehicle that has the following specifications:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A motor that powers the vehicle <\/li><li>A floorboard that you can stand on while riding <\/li><li>Handlebars <\/li><li>Two wheels <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It does not have to have a seat to be considered a motorized\nscooter, but it can without changing the definition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do I need a class M-2 license?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of the laws that recently changed. You no longer\nneed a class M-2 license to operate a motorized scooter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M-2 licenses used to be a requirement for bicycles, mopeds,\nor any bicycle with a motor. Even though an M-2 license is not required, you\nstill need a regular driver\u2019s license issued by the DMV. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your scooter does not need to be registered with the DMV or\nhave license plates as a motorcycle does. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where can I ride the motorized scooter?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some places where scooters can and cannot be\nridden. The fines for riding them in illegal places are pretty hefty, so always\nfollow the rules as much as you can. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Motorized scooters are only allowed on roads where the\nspeed limit is 25 or less. <\/li><li>If there is a bike lane, you can use the bike lane on roads\nwhere the speed limit is greater than 25. <\/li><li>They cannot be on sidewalks under any circumstances. The\npolice in most cities are very strict about this. <\/li><li>They cannot be driven faster than 15 miles per hour on the\nroad. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind that these rules apply to standard motorized\nscooters only. If you have a mobility scooter, you can drive up to 30 miles per\nhour. Mobility scooters are usually issued for seniors and others with physical\ndisabilities. So, most people own standard motorized scooters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, remember that passengers are not allowed on scooters\nand this rule is not changing. Only the driver is allowed to be on the scooter.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do I have to wear a helmet?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>California used to require helmets that were compliant with\nthe U.S. Department of Transportation. This is no longer a rule. Adults riding\nscooters on any street or bike path no longer have to wear helmets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The no helmet rule only applies to adults 18 years and\nolder. If you are younger than 18 and have a valid driver\u2019s license you can\ndrive a motorized scooter but only with a helmet on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though wearing a helmet is up to the discretion of\nadults, the state of California still strongly recommends people of all ages to\nwear a helmet. This is especially important on busy roads and at night. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Have the laws changed for mopeds?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You might be confused as to whether you own a moped or a\nmotorized scooter and the difference is important. Moped rules for California\nare different and you could face a fine or trouble if you are following the\nwrong rules. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A moped is considered to have the following characteristics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Two or three wheels (four wheels are for cars or off-road\nvehicles)<\/li><li>An electric motor and automatic transmission. <\/li><li>They can have pedals but don\u2019t need to.<\/li><li>The maximum speed is under 30 miles per hour. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The maximum speed is often the defining requirement when it\ncomes to deciding whether your mode of transportation is a moped or a motorized\nscooter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you consider your device a moped but it doesn\u2019t go over\n20 miles per hour, the DMV will most likely consider it a motorized scooter.\nThis also applies to the other way around. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have determined that your transportation is a moped,\nyou will need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>An M1 or M2 motorcycle license <\/li><li>A helmet at all times no matter your age<\/li><li>A DMV registration<\/li><li>A license plate <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Mopeds generally follow more of the requirements that a\nmotorcycle needs, while motorized scooters are treated more like bicycles.\nHowever, moped registration is a one-time requirement that does not need to be\nrenewed every year like a motorcycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why did the laws change?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many states do not require a license for motorized scooters.\nMost states also do not require helmets if the person is over the age of 18.\nHowever, some states make the person be 21 to choose not to wear a helmet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>California has now made it easier for someone to ride and\nuse a motorized scooter because they no longer need a special license. Remember\nthat the driver\u2019s license requirement has not changed though. Make sure to keep\nyour driver\u2019s license up to date and carry it with you every time you ride your\nscooter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do I need insurance?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Motorized scooters do not require insurance, so you do not\nneed to obtain or pay for it. There is insurance for motorized scooters though,\nso you can choose to have it if you want it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mopeds do need insurance, so this is another reason why\nknowing which one you own is crucially important. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final Thoughts <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are thinking of getting a motorized scooter, now is\nthe time to do it. The new laws make it much easier to ride because you don\u2019t\nneed an M2 license or a helmet. Make sure you know whether you are buying a\nmoped or a motorized scooter though as the requirements are different. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure to also follow the road rules and don\u2019t ride your\nmotorized scooter on sidewalks. Pay attention to the speed limit and ride in\nthe bike lane when you are on a faster road.
