You find a spot near the corner, the curb is plain gray concrete, there is no sign, no red paint, nothing. You park. You come back to a citation. Nothing was marked, and you were still wrong.

California curb colors mean this: white is for loading passengers, green is limited-time parking, yellow is for loading freight or passengers, red is no stopping at all, and blue is disabled parking. Separately, you may not park within 20 feet of any crosswalk, marked or unmarked, whether or not the curb is painted.

The five curb colors, straight from the handbook

The California Driver’s Handbook defines all five. These are the actual definitions, not the folk versions:

Curb color

What you may do

White

Stop only long enough to pick up or drop off passengers.

Green

Park for a limited time. The limit may be posted on signs or painted on the curb.

Yellow

Load and unload passengers and freight. Do not stop longer than the time posted. In a noncommercial vehicle you are usually required to stay with the car.

Red

No stopping, standing, or parking. Buses may stop at a red zone marked for buses.

Blue

Parking for a disabled person, or someone driving a disabled person, with a placard or special plate.

Two of these trip people up regularly. Yellow does not mean commercial vehicles only. Anyone can use a yellow zone to load, but in a regular car you generally have to stay with the vehicle. And white does not mean five minutes. It means as long as it takes to let someone in or out, which is shorter than most people treat it.

The rule with no paint: 20 feet from any crosswalk

This is the one generating tickets. Since January 1, 2025, under Assembly Bill 413, California prohibits stopping, standing, or parking within 20 feet of a crosswalk on the approach, or within 15 feet where a curb extension is present. The practice is called daylighting, because clearing that space lets drivers and people crossing actually see each other.

Two details make it costly:

It applies to unmarked crosswalks. Every ordinary intersection with sidewalks has a crosswalk whether anyone painted stripes or not. The handbook’s wording covers “an unmarked or marked crosswalk.”

The curb does not have to be painted. As San Luis Obispo County puts it, parking in a daylighted area “is a violation regardless of the presence of red curb or other pavement markings.” Cities may add paint. They are not required to, and its absence is not a defense.

Twenty feet is roughly one car length plus a bit. If you are the car closest to the corner, you are probably too close.

Where you may never park, by the numbers

The handbook’s full list is longer than most drivers remember. The distance rules:

Within 3 feet of a sidewalk ramp for disabled persons.

Within 15 feet of a fire hydrant or fire station driveway.

Within 20 feet of a crosswalk, or 15 feet where a curb extension exists.

Plus, with no measurement needed: on a marked or unmarked crosswalk, on a sidewalk or partially blocking one, in front of a driveway, on a curb that provides wheelchair access, in the crosshatched area beside a disabled space, in a zero-emission vehicle space unless you drive one, in a tunnel or on a bridge unless signs permit it, between a safety zone and the curb, double parked, or on a freeway except in an emergency.

The 72-hour rule, and why “I moved it” often is not enough

California Vehicle Code section 22651(k) lets local agencies tow a vehicle left parked on a street for 72 or more consecutive hours, where a local ordinance prohibits it. Most California cities have that ordinance.

What surprises people is what counts as moving the car. The City of Ventura, for example, requires that the vehicle be driven at least two tenths of a mile, with the odometer showing the movement. Rolling it forward one space does not reset anything, and the clock typically starts when an officer chalks the tires and leaves a notice. Rules vary by city, so check yours.

The expensive footnote: your tags

Here is the part that turns a parking ticket into a towed car. A vehicle sitting on the street with expired registration is a much easier target for enforcement than one with current tags. The parking citation is annoying. Getting towed, plus storage fees, plus a late registration penalty, all at once is a genuinely bad week.

Current tags are the cheapest insurance against that, and they take minutes. Renew your California registration with Sticker Quicker and skip the DMV office entirely, with next-day FedEx delivery of your sticker. If something is already blocking your renewal, our guide to California registration holds walks through what clears each one. And while we are on rules drivers get wrong, the California headlight law is another one that catches good drivers.

Frequently asked questions

What does a yellow curb mean in California?

A yellow curb is a loading zone for passengers and freight. Any driver may use it, not just commercial vehicles. Do not stop longer than the time posted, and if you are in a noncommercial vehicle you are usually required to stay with your car while loading or unloading.

Can I park near a crosswalk if the curb is not painted red?

No. California’s daylighting rule prohibits stopping, standing, or parking within 20 feet of a marked or unmarked crosswalk, or 15 feet where a curb extension is present, and it applies whether or not the curb is painted. Cities may add red paint, but they are not required to, and its absence is not a defense.

What does a white curb mean in California?

A white curb means you may stop only long enough to pick up or drop off passengers. It is not a short-term parking space, and there is no set number of minutes. It covers the time it actually takes for someone to get in or out of the vehicle, so the driver generally stays put.

How long can a car sit parked on a California street?

Vehicle Code section 22651(k) allows removal of a vehicle left on a street for 72 or more consecutive hours where a local ordinance prohibits it, and most California cities have one. Moving the car may require a real trip. Ventura, for example, requires at least two tenths of a mile on the odometer.

Primary sources

California Driver’s Handbook, Section 6: Navigating the Roads (curb colors and illegal parking)

County of San Luis Obispo Public Works, parking restrictions near crosswalks

City of Monterey Park, Daylighting Law

City of Ventura, Report Abandoned Vehicles (72-hour rule)

About the author

Mo G is the founder of Sticker Quicker, a licensed California DMV Business Partner (Occupational License #90656) headquartered in Fremont and serving all of California online.
