San Francisco Fleet Week 2026: The Driving and Parking Plan

San Francisco Fleet Week 2026 runs October 4 through 12, with the air show on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 9, 10 and 11, from 12:00 to 4:00 PM. The flying happens between the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, which means the entire northern waterfront is a free viewing gallery. The hard part is not the ticket. It is the car.
There is a specific sound that only happens in San Francisco in October. You are walking up Columbus with a coffee, and the air goes from ordinary to physical, and every head on the sidewalk tilts back at once. Six jets come over the Marina low and fast and the whole city grins like an eight-year-old. It is the best free show in Northern California, and it has been for decades.
Getting to it is the part people underestimate. So here is the honest version, from someone who has made the drive in from the East Bay more times than is probably reasonable.
What is actually happening, and when
| Event | Dates | Where | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fleet Week overall | October 4 to 12, 2026 | San Francisco waterfront | Varies by event |
| Air show | October 9, 10, 11 (Fri, Sat, Sun), 12:00 to 4:00 PM | Between the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz | Free from public shoreline; reserved seating ticketed |
| Fleet Fest | October 10 and 11 | Fisherman’s Wharf SkyStar Wheel and Pier 27 | Free |
The air show is headlined by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. Fleet Week also includes a Parade of Ships and ship tours, and those schedules are published on the official site closer to the week, so check fleetweeksf.org for the day-of lineup rather than trusting a roundup from last year.
The geography is doing you a favor
This is the thing to internalize. The show box sits between the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. Jets are not doing tight circles over one grandstand. They are working a corridor several miles long over open water, at altitude, in front of a city built on hills.
That means a paid seat buys you comfort, amenities and a guaranteed spot. It does not buy you the show. The show is visible from an enormous arc of shoreline and hillside. Free options that work:
- Marina Green and Crissy Field. The classic. Closest to the action, and the most crowded by a mile.
- Fort Mason and the Aquatic Park hill. Elevated, slightly less mobbed, great sightlines east and west.
- Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower’s slopes. You trade proximity for height, which is a genuinely good trade for aerobatics.
- The Embarcadero north of the Ferry Building. Easy transit access, flat, family friendly.
- Treasure Island and the East Bay shoreline. Distant but wide open, and you will not fight for a square foot of grass.
The parking truth, stated plainly
On air show days the northern waterfront absorbs a very large crowd into a neighborhood that was not designed for one. Street parking near Marina Green and Fisherman’s Wharf is effectively gone by mid-morning, and the official Fleet Week site points visitors to its own parking page and to 511.org for transit precisely because driving to the middle of it is the weakest plan available.
What actually works:
- Park once, far, and ride in. Leave the car at a BART station on your side of the bay and take the train to Embarcadero. This is the single highest-return decision of your day.
- If you must drive, aim south and walk north. A garage in SoMa or the Financial District plus a 25-minute walk up the Embarcadero beats circling the Marina for an hour.
- Arrive before 10:00 AM. The show starts at noon. The parking competition peaks well before that.
- Plan the exit, not just the entry. The show ends at 4:00 PM and so does everyone else’s patience. Either leave at 3:30 and catch the last act from the road, or settle in for an early dinner and drive out at 6:00 when the city has exhaled.
- Consider the ferry. Arriving by water at a naval air show is, frankly, the correct aesthetic choice.
The one thing that turns a parking spot into a bad day
Here is the unglamorous part, and the reason a DMV company is writing a Fleet Week guide.
Downtown San Francisco parking enforcement does not take the weekend off for a festival, and expired tags are visible from twenty feet away on a plate you just left on a public street for six hours. A citation is annoying. In California, sufficiently expired registration also puts a vehicle in tow territory, and a tow from the Marina on an air show Saturday is a genuinely miserable way to end an otherwise perfect day.
So do the five-second check before you go. Walk out to your car and look at the sticker on your rear plate. If the year on it is not current, handle that this week rather than discovering it in a parking enforcement officer’s handwriting.
Renewing takes about two minutes and no DMV visit. Renew your registration with Sticker Quicker and we process it against the DMV system in real time, then send your sticker and card by next-day FedEx. We are a licensed California DMV Business Partner (DMV Occupational License #90656), which is what lets us move that fast. Current tags, then go watch the jets.
If you want the drive itself to be the day
Fleet Week is one weekend. October in Northern California is a whole month of the best driving weather we get, and the Bay Area sits inside about a two-hour radius of an absurd amount of it. Two we have written up recently:
- Point Reyes tule elk, where the rut runs through October and the drive out to Tomales Point is worth it on its own.
- Driving to Monterey, which is genuinely at its best in the fall once the summer fog gives up.
Frequently asked questions
When is the San Francisco Fleet Week 2026 air show?
The air show runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 9, 10 and 11, 2026, from 12:00 to 4:00 PM each day. Fleet Week overall runs October 4 through 12. The flying takes place between the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz.
Can you watch the Fleet Week air show for free?
Yes. Because the show box spans the water between the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, it is visible from a long stretch of public shoreline and from the city’s hills. Marina Green, Crissy Field, Fort Mason, Telegraph Hill and the northern Embarcadero all work. Reserved seating is ticketed through the official Fleet Week site.
Should I drive to Fleet Week or take transit?
Take transit. The official Fleet Week site points visitors to 511.org for trip planning, and the northern waterfront cannot absorb air show crowds by car. If you do drive, park in SoMa or the Financial District and walk north, and arrive before 10:00 AM for a noon show.
Is Fleet Fest free?
Yes. Fleet Fest takes place October 10 and 11 at the Fisherman’s Wharf SkyStar Wheel and Pier 27, and it is free to attend.
