2290 Proof Holding Up Your Truck Registration? Here's the Fix

The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax is federal, but the hold lands at the California DMV. We review your Schedule 1 proof so it is accepted the first time, post your renewal fees while any filing issue resolves, and register your truck the same day the proof clears. Eligibility depends on the hold type and your vehicle record, and we confirm exactly what can be posted before you pay.

Why DMV wants your 2290 before it will register your truck

Who must file. The federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax applies to vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 lbs or more. DMV requires proof of filing at registration.

What counts as proof. An IRS-stamped Schedule 1, or the e-file copy with a legible IRS watermark, for the current tax period. The 2290 tax period runs July 1 through June 30.

Common rejections. A VIN on the Schedule 1 that does not match the vehicle record, proof from the wrong tax period, or an illegible watermark are the usual reasons proof bounces.

Recently purchased trucks. Newly acquired vehicles have different proof timing rules for their first registration, so a missing Schedule 1 is not always a dead end.

The tax is federal. The hold is at DMV.

E-filing services stop at the IRS. The part that actually gets your truck on the road, acceptable proof in front of the California DMV plus a completed registration, is what we do every day.

We check your Schedule 1 against the vehicle record before submission, post your renewal fees so late penalties stop while any filing problem is corrected, and issue registration the same day the proof is accepted.

How It Works

Three steps from rejected proof to registered truck

1. We review your Schedule 1

VIN, tax period, and watermark checked against the vehicle record before anything is submitted.

2. We post your fees

Renewal fees post immediately so late penalties stop while any IRS filing issue is corrected.

3. Registration issues same day

Accepted proof releases the hold and we complete the registration that day, e-copy first.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What 2290 proof does the California DMV accept?

An IRS-stamped Form 2290 Schedule 1, or the e-filed copy showing the IRS watermark, covering the current tax period for the exact VIN being registered.

Why was my Schedule 1 rejected?

The most common reasons are a VIN mismatch between the Schedule 1 and the vehicle record, proof from an expired tax period, or a watermark too faint to verify. We check all three before submission.

Do I need a 2290 for a truck under 55,000 lbs?

No. The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax starts at a taxable gross weight of 55,000 lbs. Trucks below that register without Schedule 1 proof.

Can I renew while my 2290 filing is still pending?

Your renewal fees can be posted immediately so late penalties stop. The registration itself issues once acceptable Schedule 1 proof is on file, and we process it the same day it is.

Do you handle 2290 holds for fleets and dealers?

Yes. Fleets get 2290 proof tracking alongside automated renewals, and dealers and upfitters can hand us the whole registration package on newly built or upfitted trucks.
